The beauty of the Tufo Cities doesn’t just end at their borders but extends to many striking locations across the entire Maremman territory.

The Terme di Saturnia hot springs, only 20km away, are famous all over the world for their unique proprieties. For centuries, these waters have flowed into naturally-created pools at a rhythm of 700 litres a second and at a constant temperature of 37° C. These warm springs flow thanks to Amiata Mountain, an ancient volcano that heats up the mineral-filled water. Close to the Terme di Saturnia are other smaller hot springs including the Terme di Sorano, Bagno Vignoni and the Terme di San Filippo, where you can enjoy the water’s various beneficial proprieties. Many people also enjoy relaxing in the Mulino Waterfalls, where the thermal waters flow from a beautifully suggestive waterfall into small pools, which are open to the public for free.

Amiata Mountain and its beautiful parks are about an hour’s car ride away from the Tufo Cities. Here visitors can take nature walks through the many protected reserves, relax on the beaches in the very chic Argentario Coast or go shopping in the seaside towns of Orbetello, Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano. Visitors can also take a boat from the ports at Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano to the Tuscan Archipelago and its beautiful islands.

The city of Orvieto is also close by for those who want to experience the art and culture at the heart of this territory. While recognised as part of Umbria, Orvieto was built with the same volcanic rock used in the Tufo Cities. As well as its famous Cathedral, Orvieto is also home to many striking archaeological sites and beautiful museums.

The hotels listed on this site all organise day trips outside of the Tufo Cities. Buses will pick you up from your hotel and take you to some of Italy’s most breathtaking cities including Siena, Florence and Rome, where you can admire the rich culture and artistic heritage or just relax with a day of shopping.
